Magnesium

Magnesium is soft, malleable silver-white alloy, which is one of most common in nature.

General characteristics

Magnesium is alkaline earth metal. The metal has interesting property: when it enters air, appear protective oxygen tape forms, which gives appearance of magnesium a dull effect. In addition, alloy has following characteristics:

  • Interaction with water;
  • Resistance to alkali, soda, gasoline;
  • Density of 1.74 g/cm3;
  • Melts at temperature of 651 °C, and boils at 1107 °C;
  • High thermal conductivity.

Characteristic properties of magnesium may differ from each other with temperature. So, for example, at temperature of 600 °C, density decreases by 6%, and when heated to boiling point, hexagonal lattices are destroyed.

Application area

Today, magnesium metal used in various fields. So magnesium can be found both in medicines or alloy wheels, and in military affairs (for manufacture of lighting and incendiary rockets). Magnesium alloys are light and durable, which makes them indispensable in space and aviation industries. Pure magnesium and some of its chemical compounds are used in manufacture of energy-consuming backup electric batteries.

In addition, metal also used for production of refractory materials, in metallurgy and other industries. On sale alloy offered in ingots, sheets, bars and other forms.

Steel grades

Among alloys have become very popular brands Ma2−1, Ml8 and Az31. They are manufactured to following standards and chemical composition:
